HOW TO TRAIN THE HUMAN SPIRIT: RULE 2: PRACTICING THE WORD OF GOD: (James 1:22). "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own sales." There are so many self deceived people in what they called church today, it is no wonder why the sinner will not open a Bible to find out how to be delivered from the penalty of sin ! Practicing the Word is what James called being "a doer of the Word." Many people think that being a doer of the word is keeping the 10 Commandments. Under the new covenant, however, we have one commandment: the commandment of love. And I might add, love is an action that is demonstrated not just talked about ! If you love someone, you won't steal from him or her. You won't lie about him or her. The apostle Paul said that love is the fulfillment of the law. If you walk in love, you want break any law that was given to curb sin. In this verse of Scripture, James is urging believers to do primarily what is written in the epistles: the epistles or letters to the believers tells the believers what they have and who they are in Christ Jesus. To act upon this Word is to demonstrate to a lost world that Jesus Christ is in you; who is the building of God. For example, the apostle Paul wrote to the Philippian, "Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Philippians 4:6). The amplified Bible says, "Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything by prayer and petition [definite request] with thanksgiving continue to make your wants known to God." Usually people practice only part of this. They don't mind practicing the part that tells them to pray, but if they practice one part and not the other, they are not practicing the Word. They are not a doer of the Word. First, the Lord said not to fret. If we're going to fret and have anxieties, it isn't going to do any good to make requests. If God said not to fret, this means we can keep from it. God is a just God, and He won't ask us to do something we can't do ! There was a time when I believe that I could make my requests known to God, but I had difficulty believing that I needn't fret. God, however, said we don't have to fret, so I say, "I refuse to fret or have any anxiety about anything." I take my request to Him, and then I think Him. This quiets and pacifies the troubled spirit that the devil will try to make me have. If inner turmoil persists, I simply go right back to this verse and read it again out loud. I keep claiming it. If we follow Paul's advice and "do not fret or have anxiety about anything." We can believe God for the promise of the verse that follows: "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4: 7). And who is Christ Jesus ? None other than the Word ! Many people want what this seventh verse talks about, but they don't want to do what the six verse says to do to get it. However, to receive this "peace. . . Which passeth all understanding," we must "Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (v. 6). God's peace. . . Shall garrison and mount guard" is the amplified Bible's translation of verse seven. It will keep guard over your spirit which is your heart and your mind, which is the makeup of the soul, the will, and emotions as well as your intellect. The education of our spirits comes by practicing the Word. Not by attending what you called church. Can you reap the results and have peace without being a door of the Word ? No, you really can't stop deceiving yourself. Be a doer of the Word, and you'll grow spiritually.
